I'm going to be gone for a few days. Some fairly disreputable people turned up a lead, which has the distressing tinge of creditability to it. If all goes well, I should be back sometime next week.

If that doesn't happen, go and talk to Lorna. She's got some information for you.

I'm off to go do some horrible things. If it works out, I'll be back next week. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what. Yes, I know you're rolling your eyes at my lame 'superspy' melodrama. Blame the Professor.

If it doesn't work out, there's information in that envelope for the Professor, Amanda and you. No, I don't expect you to need to open it. Think of it like a very creepy form of travel insurance.

So, you need to figure out where you want to go to dinner after I get back and collect my little sleeve of secrets back.

I think I found him. Motherfucker's been laying down markers in case we're looking for him. I doubt the leather brigade could follow them, but they're there.

Look, I assume Charles has told you the rest of the information about what's going on with his father and de la Rocha. Unfortunately, I had to let it come from him. There are too many fucking veriables involved in this thing right now.

In a nutshell, Alphonso de la Rocha is dead. Normally, this would be followed with us buying Wisdom drinks and a round of cheering. That salope forfeited his rights to life a while ago; I got to watch his handiwork on surround sound and high definition, which leads me to terribly creative thoughts about ways he could shuffle off the mortal coil.

But it's not that simple. According to Charles, Shaw and the Black Court of the Hellfire Club are making noises that any attack on their members by any member of the school will be treated as a declaration of war between us. Xavier isn't sure whether or not Shaw actually has the clout to draw the rest of the Club along with him. But if Wisdom is looking to terrorize people into staying away from Amanda and his sister by killing Alphonso in a gruesome manner, he might scare the Club enough to fall in behind Shaw.

If the Hellfire Club goes to war against us, Nathan, we're screwed. We might be able to get the kids out and clear, but Shaw will go after families, relatives, friends. We both know the kind of dirty war that he likes to fight. And he won't stop. Hell, we can't even go in with all the X-Men and level the club. His political connections will have us up against the weight of the government in hours if we tried that.

I'm going to try and talk to Wisdom. Convince him to pull back and think his way through this. We can shop Alphonso in such a way that Shaw won't have proof that he was killed by Wisdom, and that will limit his ability to retaliate. I bet his recent failed attempt on the mansion has eroded his support enough to bar another independent attack.

Charles has decided that the right thing to do is to offer de la Rocha the protection of the X-Men. Considering that Pete made his name bypassing SPB guarded targets and removing them makes that protection pretty limited. If Pete decides that revenge is more important, or makes a mistake, and we could have a dead X-Man or two. But they're not listening to me about that.

Keep an eye on Amanda. If something goes disasterously wrong, information on how to find Wisdom will go to the Professor. Don't let any of the 'team leaders' take charge of it, Nathan. They don't understand what they're dealing with, and chances are that they'll get someone killed.

Thanks for letting me know. The disappearing act's a bit old. *wry*

You do realise Lorna never speaks to me if she can possibly help it, right? Something about my boyfriend being a monster. Good thing you'll be coming back in one piece then.

A.

I've gotten briefed in, yes. We'll talk when you get back.

Whether it's doomed to fail or not, Remy, this bodyguarding idea at least has a shot at chipping away at Shaw's support for an all-out attack on the school. It provides anyone in the Club who might not be committed to the idea an out, if they choose to take it. It's a damned slender thread, I know, but if it comes down to that, it's something. This isn't just a life-and-death situation - it's politics, too, and in politics appearance is sometimes everything.

Obviously the best-case scenario is Pete backing off, but I don't think that's likely.

If you die, I'm going to kill you.

And when you get back, make sure you've robbed a bank or something on the way because I'm going to pick the most expensive restaurant in existence.

*hugs* Be careful, dammit.
