Subject: The Baby Bird

Since my darling bride's notice has gone up, guess it's time to settle up between us.

I'm going to, obviously, hand maintenance and upgrade responsibility of the Blackbird over to you. I'd also deeply appreciate any collaboration you felt like doing on getting the Baby Bird up and running. Smaller design, but I don't think I'll have to sacrifice too much speed off the top end, and the stealth package I'm looking at is top-notch indeed.

Got a share set up in the Usual Secure Place for schematics, blueprints, and other stuff. Feel free to take a look sometime, let me know what you think.

Fabbing this bitch is going to be slow and painful, but I should be able to do it with a lot of the Professor's grey-market contacts in the military-industrial machine.

In short - the Baby Bird is going to be smaller, tighter, and just about as fast as her big brother. At least if _I_ have anything to say about it.

Haroun

... is midnight. I'm assuming you've all been reviewing the tactical plan since the briefing earlier this evening, but if you've got any questions, now or on the plane is the time to ask. We're going to have a limited amount of time on the ground before things start getting exciting, so let's make sure we're all on the same page before we land.

All of you receiving this have classes with Mr. al-Rashid, Mr. Wagner, Mr. Dayspring, Mr. Marko, Ms. Blaire, or myself. Consider this your official notice; all of our classes are cancelled for both tomorrow and Friday. Most of you will find reading assignments in your boxes at some point tonight, although I can't speak for everyone.

I wanted to touch base with you at some point (not today) about the Powered Flight class. Since I'm back five-by-five next term I think I'll take the class back from you. From what I've been able to see you did an excellent job with the kids - I've been reviewing tape and their exam scores.

Thanks again for covering the class while I was down. I appreciate it deeply, and I owe you a major favor in return.

Do you think I could get you to use your brain to realign my ring back to its original shape and structural integrity?

Lorna says not to fly with it from now on. Next time I see her she'll realign the metallic matrix to make it more heat-resistant.

What, precisely, did you make this thing out of? And what's the thermal stress properties?

I ask because I went for a flight this morning - in leathers - and when I landed the ring felt squishy. Deformed. Is this thing primarily gold?

Haroun

PS - I might - maybe - need a touch-up next time I'm in .hi.us or you're in .ny.us. Or can I get Nate to examine it and possibly do any repairs that might be needed?

One: What did you and/or Lorna make this ring out of? I need to know for thermal stress reasons. I'd hate to fuck up your handiwork by wearing it while flying and having the darned thing melt off my finger.

That would suck.

Two: Is the First National Bank of Dayspring still open? I asked Alison to go ring-shopping with me (since, as you pointed out, we've already fucked tradition).

She ain't cheap. Worth it and more, but I'm not going to embarrass her.

Well.

Since we're going to bugger tradition and all that anyway, I'd like for you to come with me for a trip into the city.

Also, any medical data you'd care to share on how _hot_ your skin gets while lasing would be very, very useful. I've already got the melting points of gold, silver, platinum, titanium, steel, and a few other metals tucked away in the ol' cranium. (I know, I know, steel is an alloy, not a metal. Shush!) I've heard you kvetch about ruining nail polish jobs and/or manicures with your power before, and I'd really hate to see you with a literal goldfinger.

That'd be a damned shame. The point is to _wear_ it, not to melt it when things get intense.

I'm sorry for losing it at you on the team board last night. I'd say I was in a state, but I think that's being redundant and it's not much of an excuse. I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't been there at the restaurant last night, but I doubt it would have been good.

So thanks, and sorry.

I need a quick diagnostic scan of the 'ware. I was exposed the other day to some EMP - not very powerful, but I could definitely _feel_ it. Very strange.

Can I have you run a full diagnostic on the 'ware if you get a couple of moments? And would it be possible to Faraday cage off as much as possible to keep from being EMPed back to parapeligia?

The visa issue resolved itself a little faster than expected - Kazakhstan's rules are a little Byzantine, but whatever contact Charles has was able to fast-track them for us. So I've gone ahead and booked our flights for tonight. We've got a plane leaving for Frankfurt at 9pm, then a few hours layover there tomorrow morning before the connecting flight to Almaty.

We're going to stay with the nomads, by the way - I hope no one's got any objections to that, but we've got to do a fair bit of talking to them, specifically the families making the complaints about how their children are being treated. Our hosts are in their winter camp between Almaty and Khorogos; the school's in the vicinity of Lake Balkhash, so it works out well. We'll have to take some equipment with us for the purposes of recording and reproducing - I'll take care of that.

PS: The winter in Kazakhstan is apparently very, very cold this year.

Good afternoon, ladies.

In the New Year I have a medical appointment with an audiologist who is creating for me some custom kit. Ali, I figure you'd want to tag along when I go.

Terry, the reason I need you is for testing. I know you can kick out the decibels, and you're Alison's fair-haired girl right now, so I figured you'd be amenable to a little bit of efficiency testing. Alison, I'll need you on-hand to eat any excess noise. How good is Terry's ability to create tones within specific frequency bands?

The checkup was routine, but given what I do for a living that's not teaching Arabic or hand-to-hand combat it's only smart to protect my hearing. And there was some reason for concern on my initial checkup, hence spending a great deal of my out-of-pocket funds to get these custom earplugs. My taste in music certainly hasn't helped anything, nor did my power's tendency to be ... a mite on the noisy end.

Salaam,
Haroun

PS - Terry, I could ask your Old Man for this, and in fact I probably should. But seeing as how you spend so much time around Alison and you're taking an interest in the music biz, a few hours to get to know one another better wouldn't go amiss, would it?

Had a bad morning down in Medical, then I took some of the happy painkillers and a long nap. Woke up, and I've got _far_ more sensitivity and ROM than I had yesterday.

Yeah. And _another_ reaction I think you'll be _very_ interestd in. Freaked me right out once I realized it, let me tell you.

Also - I need to go clothes shopping.

Subject: Altercation

Well, that was decidedly _odd_. Weeks of managing, at best, a foot-wiggle, and then today I shot to my feet and kicked Marius in the head. Twice. Hurt like a _bitch_ - I'm out-of-shape and my back hates me - but what was really disturbing is that the pain just ... stopped. Like somebody flicked a switch or something.

Does the MMI have the option to act like a pain editor or something? Is this _normal_? Thinking back, I lost sensitivity when I was reacting - it felt a _lot_ like the old system did. Then when I realized what was happening, it felt like it always does - temperature, pressure, etc. That's when I collapsed.

But here's the weirdest part of all. After my little nap (I _love_ the painkillers you guys hand out, really!) I could _move both my legs_. Standing's still a little beyond me, but it's like I'd made a breakthrough or something. Still a little sore in the lower back, but I can swing my legs now, feel pressure, and some ... other things.

I think I need a full diagnostic so we can determine _what happened_. I'd hate for this to be a glitch.
