Okay, volunteers. Here's the plan.
We've got a permit to hold an informative rally from 8:00am until 5:00pm in Salem Center Park. I've got the materials to set up the booth, I'll need probably two people to go with me to the park around 7 on Saturday to set that up. I went by and picked up our pamphlets and booklets from the printer this morning - I have to take the pamphlets back for a reprint (wrong color scheme - all the photos looked green) but we'll have boxes of them to hand out.
The permit says we can't set up closer than 300 yards to any other rally or demonstration's booths. Hence why we may end up stuck over by the swings and sandbox - but I think that can be turned to our advantage. Because while all the junior brownshirts will be over by the main open area, the parents are usually milling about in the back, and that's who I want to target. We may not be able to change the minds of people who are hard-set on being bigots, but if we can get our message across to people who'll listen, well, two voices are stronger than one and all that.
Having talked to the Professor, he's been adamant about NOT interacting with the FoH folks. So far, I think not a single meeting there has gone well, and I'd like to try and prove that we CAN do this without it degrading into fisticuffs.
Clarice, Catseye - you're the two most visibly different folks that'll be there. Don't do anything to hide that. I want people to look, to ask questions. Be ready to talk to anyone who might ask you the odd questions.
Paige, Doug, Angelo - You're the on-site adults. Professor Xavier's asked me to make sure one of you is at the booth at all times. If people have questions about the school itself, they'll be directed to one of you.
Doug - there's also a local Greek festival over at the Scottish Rite Temple across town (yes, a Greek festival at a Scottish temple. I don't get it either.) We may get some spillover - if we need translation, you may need to hop around a bit.
Dani, Jennie, Terry, Rahne - You four can be probably the best examples that mutants are just like everyone else. Just be friendly, talkative - be yourselves.
If people get argumentative or confrontational, be the one to back down. Most importantly, do not - do not - use any display of powers to try and wow or intimidate people. If someone's legitimately interested in what you can do, tell them - we don't need Catseye or Rahne giving some old lady a heart attack or Terry setting off every car alarm in town by showing off. Not that I think any of you would - but just echoing the Professor's concerns.
If the FoH raises a stink - a little birdie told me there'll actually be journalists from out of town reporting from the crowd. Out of town means that they're not likely to be easily hushed by local influence. If any crap gets started by the FoH, word will get out, and we come out looking like the good guys.
Thanks for volunteering, again. This should be a rousing success. I've got faith in all of you.
