Mystery still surrounds the events of New Year's Eve in which over 8 million people died world wide. It has been determined that slightly over 90% of the world's mutant population were impacted by an unknown energy source and subsequently died in what has been called an unprecedented display of mass spontaneous human combustion. The explosion had dire repercussions for the people around them, either killing them outright or causing area damage - some died driving or flying vehicles, were in areas that were delicate or flammable or explosive. One noted case was of an elected member of the House who took several other representatives with her when she spontaneously exploded.
It is estimated that of the close to 2 million mutants of varying power levels worldwide, less than 200,000 survived, most of those at the "low" or "gamma" power range. Their deaths caused an estimated 8 million dead worldwide and close to a trillion in property damage.
There is yet no explanation for the phenomenon. Some religious groups - Christian and Muslim, have declared that it is God's judgement falling on mutants. Anti-mutant extremists have claimed that it was the result of a mass conspiracy by mutants to destroy humankind that went terribly and fortuitously wrong. Likewise, anti-human mutant groups have claimed it was part of a plan to eradicate mutants. Regardless of the cause, it is agreed that "Mutie Day" or "M-Day" as it is becoming known as, is the worst disaster in the world's history.
With the lack of answers, fear and paranoia have driven most human/mutant integration processes and efforts into the background and the public demand is for protection against mutants. While not entirely outlawed, incidents of human on mutant violence have spiked and obvious mutants are subject to regular harassment and discrimination. Legislation calling for mutant registration, restriction of rights or outright segregation has been fast-tracked in governments all over the world.
Investigations and official governmental inquiries continue, but as yet, have raised more questions than answers.
