Everything is still on hold as it’s the weekend and we’re still waiting on official permission to throw this little thing and include you students in it.
Please let me know ASAP if I have to turn around and cancel things. Otherwise, invitations can be out the printer’s door before 11 on Tuesday.
I’ve got a temporary hold on Piper House for Sept 25, 2004. It’s a large estate house less than a half-hour away from here. It’ll accomodate 200 people if we’re feeling ambitious and the guest list has shaped up beautifully. If we get the usual response rate on these things - it’s a quiet time of year for parties so we may get more - we should be looking at 150 people, including students, which is a nice number for a little party. I would be happy with less but I’ve inflated the list due to the short notice.
I was obnxious enough to call about twenty people on the guest list and bully them into saying they’d come even before the invitations are printed off because I’ve been known to do exactly this often enough in the past. They’re all used to me being a pain, they’re just as bad as I am about wanting to get pretty and go out, they’ll show up.
Permits aren’t hard to come by at all, I’ll get someone on those Tuesday morning if all’s well with this.
Instead of the vans, I was thinking it would be more fun for the students if we simply rented a handful of limos and Mr. Lee’s contacts have come in terrifically handy there.
Because Shinobi and I are throwing this we’re covering everything except the cash bar, which will be set up in the main dining hall of Piper House just to keep things from getting in any way obnoxious. Champagne will be served out on the floor along with non-alcoholic drinks, we’ll just have to put the students on the honour system though heaven knows one glass won’t hurt but you didn’t hear that from me. This is my big tax break for the year, I’m looking forward to this.
We’ll be taking donations for HeliX all night and I’m thinking we’ll probably be able to throw together a fairly impressive little silent auction as I had a few offers already.
Parents should be welcome to attend, I think. Yes? No?
Kitty informs me that this should be a full formal dance. I’ve taken hersqueaking advice seriously.
What else needs to be done:
HeliX invitation list: I need to get Jamie or one of his compatriots to come up with one. Anyone?
Information: I would love to have the students put together some materials on HeliX and RedX. We can set up all kinds of information and get large photos printed off to put up in the front hall and front room so that the guests get a look at what they’re supporting.
Music: Alison, Shinobi and I know better than to put our fingers in where they’ll just get smacked. All yours unless you don’t want it in which case it can be covered. A formal invitation to PCIF (where did you get that name?) awaits.
Food: Lorna, same as the music thing. You have your choice of non-participation, menu creation, caterer hiring, having slaves hired to do your bidding, putting the students to work, or anything else. Standard formal fare; anything you can eat with one hand, standing up, without risking a dry-cleaning bill. Again, we know better than to get underfoot. We’ll just concentrate on looking pretty.
Leaving the school grounds: Yes, obviously, we will be. Scott, of course we need permission for this and we’ll need teachers to come along. I don’t know what the rules are for that. Help?
Setup: I think the students might have fun doing this, which is why I picked a Saturday. They can get ready at the house after the setup, there’s rooms available for that. Students on the list, let me know now if you’d rather not spend Saturday afternoon at Piper House setting up - however, this is a benefit for you too and I will be plying you with all the pizza and other horrible junk you need to get the job done.
Clothing: Of course we have to shop. Alison, I promised Kitty a shopping trip for the girls. I hope some of the female staff will be helping me out here. As for the boys and men, I know better than to leave anything to most of them. I can have someone from one of the tuxedo rental stores come out to the house and put the boys through their paces next weekend. They don’t even have to enter a store if they don’t want to.
If this goes well, I think it might be fun to look at doing it again some time.
Now, quickly, tell me what I’ve missed. Please. I haven’t done this kind of thing without an assistant in forever.
