Sis,
I'm sorry I'm not there in person. Love you, thank you for being one of my lights, and have a wonderful, blessed start to the new year.
♥D
[Inside the first box are three items. A small metal trinket box with a black and multi-colored glass top is the first. Inside that is a bracelet made of star links containing three charms. The center charm is a blue enamel heart with a moon, star, and smaller heart in silver - the back is engraved "sister of my heart". The left is a purple enamel circle with a lowercase 'd' in silver. The right is a trio of stars engraved "Reach for the stars". The third item is a picture containing two charms - a lowercase 'm' in teal and a glass bead with a silver butterfly holding it secure. The second box contains a pair of triangular beaded earrings with inlay work and a second note.]
M,
The trinket box is from Italy. The top is murano glass in a millefiori style, which is why it looks like slightly melted beads that have been cross-cut. Fuck Columbus, but apparently beads made in this style got used in trade with indigenous people and worked into their own crafts. It also looks cool and reminded me of you, but I thought you'd like that little historical tidbit.
The earrings are made by an artist with Lumbee ancestry. I know - not your tribe - but I loved them when I saw them and thought they'd look rad on you. I've included her business card so you can see her other work.
The bracelet can hold more charms, but as you get closer to finishing school and expanding your role in the community I thought it was important to remind you to keep reaching. Love yourself, help others where you can, and keep trying to leave the world a little better than you found it. I'm so proud of who you strive to be and incredibly blessed to call you my little sister.
Love you always, no matter how far the geographical distance between us might be. ♥D
