I know you were kind of running things before HeliX went on hiatus after the CoffeeQuake fire, so I want you in the loop on this. From everything I can see, you were doing some really good work with the group - as much as I said it wasn't much more than a social thing; hey, it's got to start somewhere, right?
I want to take it a step beyond that. There's stuff we can do to actually make changes: lobbying for legislation, campaigning to new voters for mutant-friendly policies and representatives, getting the idea out that mutant awareness isn't a bad thing, and that knowledge can fight xenophobia. It needs PR, and PR needs people who know how to shake hands and smile and put people at ease. And that means I need you on board.
I've got a plan for a starting project, which I've attached to this email (you've got Powerpoint, right?) - some grassroots political stuff going up to the FAA to get some regulations moved through. Small fish, really. But it has to start somewhere.
Think about it,
JHF

Date: 2005-04-12 03:50 pm (UTC)And now I kinda wish Shinobi was still here--he's the guy you'd want to go to for this kinda thing. He and Mr. Beaubier threw this big fancy benefit party for the group a while back, and it went okay, but I kinda felt like I was on display the whole night, sort of a "and look what these precocious kids are doing now, isn't it great?" kind of thing . . . anyway, I think I do still have business cards from some of the people who were there, I can dig around for them--and the Professor probably knows them all anyway, so you could go ask him. Don't think I'll be much help starting the thing up again, though--especially not with my crazy arsonist cousins hanging around. Last thing you want when you're trying to kick the thing off again is more fires and maybe people getting hurt because the Wonder Twins are trying to discourage me.
You know who you should really be talking to? Alison. She was backing the group pretty much from start to finish last time around, and I bet she'd jump at the chance to get involved again. And if you're planning on doing a lot of the hobnobbing with politicians and more stuff like that party, you could do a lot worse than get Manny for your PR face-person. I mean, he's not my favorite person, but he knows that arena a hell of a lot better than I do, and as long as he doesn't start shooting his mouth off about his powers, he can be pretty likeable when he tries.
I know this probably isn't what you were hoping for, but--well, if there's one thing I figured out last time it's that political activism isn't actually my strong suit. You sound like you have a lot better handle on that than I did, so maybe you'll have better luck too.

Date: 2005-04-12 03:55 pm (UTC)Hey, everyone's got their own way of helping things along. You got the ball rolling, and that's saying a lot. I'll see what Ms. Blaire has to say, and where it can go from here.
Thanks a lot, man.
