Emails to Shan, Doug, all staff

Um, hi.
The Professor suggested you'd be the best person to help Meggan learn to talk properly and to read and write. She's come a long way on her own, but she's at the stage where she needs someone trained who knows what they're doing and who knows kids to help her get further. Could I come see you and talk about this?

But thought it ought to be formal. I'm trying to sort out classes for Meggan with Shan, teaching her to talk and read and write and the rest, and both the Prof and I thought you'd be good to help with that. Besides, I need someone to watch her when I'm doing powers training with Moira and it'd be killing two birds with one stone, as it were. But only if you've got the time, yeah? A balanced social life's important, or that's what Nate keeps trying to drill into my head. *grins*

Those of you who had me for classes for last term'll know I failed pretty much every exam I had this last round, and I'm wanting to fix that. Only I don't do so well with the self-directed study - I need lessons and homework and the odd test to make sure stuff's sinking in. Any chance of some help? I need English, Maths, Biology and World History. I'm also taking up Psychology, but that's more me reading the book than anything else. I don't need supervising so much - I can always ask one of me mates to tutor me and answer questions and stuff, it's just the actual getting started and the rest. Tho' I wouldn't say no to the occasional bit of time spent bouncing things off someone's brain for the trickier bits, especially the non-science stuff. Most of my friends are science nerds, not so much with the humanities.
Cheers,
A.

Subject: Meg
Balanced social lives are for popular people. (Hush, I know some people would consider me popular here. I'm still a geek at heart.) Which is to say, I'd be totally happy to help Meg out. You know I think she's the best ever already, so it's not a problem at all.
As an aside, I was trying to come up with a clever witchy email nickname, and just totally couldn't come up with anything. The Green Day and referencing The WIzard of Oz made me think Glinda, because you _are_ a good witch, but you're not nearly that girly. :) And past that, there's some really bad witch stuff on television. Like Charmed. *shudder* Oh well. I'll just have to come up with something else.
Also? Dear lord, do I babble. :)

Ta, mate. I figured it wouldn't be a problem, but better to ask proper and not make assumptions and all that. And this was I can cross off something else on the Schedule of Doom, finding a sitter for Meg when I'm in powers training. I've let that slide a bit and need to get back up to speed.
Same as everything, really. Oh well, making the effort now.
No, not that girly (except in Asgard) and definitely not one of those wanna-bes from Charmed. Name doesn't start with P, for a start. *grins* Thanks for playing, try again. ;)
Off to New York this morning, with Meg. I saw something about a petting zoo during the summer hols, thought she might get a quick out of small fuzzy baby animals. Catch you when we get back to sort out details?

No worries. You know what assumption does, after all. Makes an ass out of u and mption. ;-) Or, as I read someplace, assumption is the mother of all fuckups.
You also haven't been surgically enhanced for the fanboys, so there's another difference. ;-)
Hee. Petting zoos are fun. And absolutely. Have fun with Meg.

I'd be happy to work up some materials for you on the subject of Biology... notes, study plans, a couple of pop quizzes to surprise yourself with, that sort of thing. ;) I'm on night-shifts this week, so something to keep myself occupied with during the long, boring evenings is quite welcome. I will leave any actual tutoring up to Moira, since you two are closer, but the paperwork I can handle.

Date: 2005-06-09 06:29 am (UTC)I would love to help Meggan. Can you give me an idea of where she's at developmentally? I assume we're talking some basic language-learning at first, and integrating reading and writing into that, but it's good to know what kinds of things I should plan to start with. Is there anything I should be particularly careful of, in terms of teaching materials? Anything she's really afraid of that one might find in a typical kids' book? (Leong was petrified of bears when he was a toddler, and believe me, that was downright counterproductive with Paddington books scattered everywhere.) Have you been doing anything with her (like bedtime stories or watching television) that you've noticed she really responds to?
Also, I saw your email to the staff, and if you're still looking for some help in English this summer, I would be happy to work out some summer-length coursework or tutorial with you. Is there any genre you're particularly interested in? Subversive fiction, fantasy (though perhaps with real magic there isn't so much of a call for that in your life ;), something that you think might be interesting as summer study? If anything, I'm always available for questions about books - it is my calling. ;)
I hope you and Meggan are recovering well. My thoughts are with you both - I'm so glad she was returned safely.
