Nate,
I'd have called, but I can't get a secure line out of N'Djamena - believe me, I tried - so I've had to go the encrypted email route. I need your help. Or the X-Men's help, rather. I'm fine, don't worry. It's just that I've come across something that I think the X-Men are best suited to deal with. Very much up their/your alley. If you can't help, I'll get in touch with GW and see if I can't talk him and some of the others into coming down here and being all altruistic for a little while. Good for the soul and all.
I suppose I should tell you what's going on before I start making contingency plans. It started with this mutant kid in the last group of refugees I ferried into Chad. Mangar was just starting to manifest some kind of electrokinesis - he was having a little trouble with it, but nothing really dangerous. Nice kid. I tried to give him some advice based on knowing Mina for so long, and I think it helped a little. I'd thought of getting in touch with the mansion about him, but when I went back a couple of days later to the camp where I left him and his mother to ask her if I could do that, she told me that he'd been taken in the middle of the night. By government troops, not by militia.
She asked me to look into it, so I did. Took me five days and some well-placed bribes to find any info at all. What it led me to was a training camp up in Northern Chad, in the desert. They've got at least fifteen mutant kids there giving them military training, Nate. The oldest I saw couldn't be any more than sixteen. I hightailed it back to the border and started asking around in the camps, and there have been other disappearances. Didn't surprise me. There's no way to monitor the damned places properly, and even if they're not as bad as the ones in Sudan they're pretty lawless, and the NGOs are more worried about feeding people. Not that they have the personnel to keep order, anyway.
I took pictures. Tried to focus on the set-up of the camp, but I didn't get all I wanted so I attached some written descriptions, too. Drew up what I could of dossiers on the kids I identified based on talking to their relatives, they're attached too. I can get more, I know I can, I just need another couple of days. And people who'll do something with the information in the end.
So, yeah. Help?

Date: 2005-07-14 08:06 pm (UTC)A little too much nostalgia involved here, if you know what I mean. I don't know precisely what the thinking is on an intervention of this sort this far from home, but I'm certainly going to find out.
Stay in N'Djamena for now, until I get back to you. I'll do that as soon as I can. If you can dig up any more intel while you're there, do it.
