Dear Charles,
I know I've been a lamentable correspondent these last several months. A number of the initiatives I consulted with you about at our last meeting at that conference have been developing quite successfully and taking up a great deal of my time. I must remember to send you some of the data on the 'Mutation and Culture' program at some point soon. The museums are doing a booming business.
I am, I fear, rambling. We have something of a situation here in Budapest and I find myself at a loss as to how to respond. It is in essence a law-enforcement situation. You may or may not know that several very prominent citizens have been murdered here in the city over the last several weeks. They came from a range of occupations - the civil service, the business community, and so forth - but the one thing they had in common is that they were all open about their genetic status.
You know how hard we have worked here in Hungary to maintain a mutant-friendly climate. These murders have caused a great deal of distress. At first they were thought to be the work of an anti-mutant group - here, in Hungary! Then the police started to receive letters and phone calls from someone identifying himself as 'Nimrod'. I believe you know the mythological reference as well as I do, Charles.
After the last murder, our police were able to identify him. 'Nimrod' is Joszef Veres, formerly a member of our Special Forces. Two years ago he was medically discharged from the military and institutionalized for treatment of schizophrenia. Four months ago he was released, as his condition was thought to have stabilized with the help of medication. Clearly this is not the case.
He is a mutant himself, Charles. His military file does not include much in the way of details, merely that he enjoys some sort of physical enhancement. The police attempted to take him into custody several days ago, shortly after the last murder, and he escaped, killing eleven officers in the process.
I have heard certain rumors about your capabilities of late, old friend. Is there anything you can do to help us? Locating him is not the problem, I believe; his mental illness seems to make him prone to the sort of errors that allow the police to track him successfully. Taking him into custody, on the other hand, would appear to be highly problematic. I tell you, Charles, I do regret the programs that discouraged Hungarian mutants from taking on military or police roles. Appeasing Romania was not worth situations like this.
I hope to hear from you soon,
Istvan

Date: 2005-08-16 03:41 am (UTC)A pleasure to hear from you, as always, though I wish the circumstances were happier. Frankly, I was hoping to hear from you on this matter; the news services have been far less thorough than I had hoped in their coverage of the murders.
Rumor is often exaggerated, as I'm sure you well know, but I do have certain resources that I can put at your disposal. Thank you for the included files; I have no doubt that I can count on you to arrange matters at your end, and if all goes well we may be able to resolve the situation quickly. Hungary has been an example to the world with its treatment of mutant affairs, an example the world sorely needs.
Sincerely,
Charles
