Subject: something of a rather large favor to ask...

Would you consider a new suitemate? For various reasons, it's inadvisable to have Tommy Jones in a suite by himself. You struck both Jean and myself as the most trustworthy candidate in the right age and gender range. Without going into too much detail, there have been incidents - I suppose we should have expected that, given Tommy's former affiliations and his attitude. Your presence, in that sense, would be a deterrent, and I know that we can trust you to keep an eye on Tommy as well, and advise us if there's anything going on with him that we need to know.

I realize this is a lot to ask. I'm basically proposing to stick you with possibly the most difficult suitemate imaginable and a fair amount of extra responsibility. If you don't want to take it, that's perfectly all right; we can find someone else. But you were, as I said, the first and best candidate to come to mind, so I thought we needed to give you the option.

Mr. Summers,

Oh, is that what Ms. Munroe was referring to? If I may ask, what happened to Tommy that you're making this request now?

I am honored that you have asked this of me, but I must take a day or two to think about this. While I have spoken to Tommy once before and we had what might pass for a civilized conversation in some circles, I don't think that I should make an immediate decisions without considering the facts and what the future may bring.

I wouldn't want you to rush into a decision. Take what time you need, and if you need to discuss any concerns with myself or Ororo, all you need to do is ask.

As for what happened to him... you'll need to know, if you decide to do this. If you don't, I know I can trust you to keep this in confidence. He was assaulted twice this week by other students, and made a thankfully abortive attempt to take his own life this weekend. I think you can probably understand now why we believe that a suitemate would be in order.

Mr. Summers,

I see. So my duty would be to befriend him, watch over him, and warn you if I suspect that he is repeating past behavior? (And I don't mean that to sound as if I feel that I have to befriend him. But being his confidante, at whatever level I can manage, would serve to inhibit him from taking out his frustration on anyone. And he seems like he just needs a friend, too.)

And I assume this arrangement would require me to move into his suite, and not for him to move into the suite I share with Artie and Miles, yes?

That's it in a nutshell. You certainly don't have to befriend him - if that happens, so much the better, mind you. Jean believes he may be beginning to understand how difficult deliberately isolating himself from the rest of the students might make things for him, so he may be more receptive over time. In either case, I know that I could trust you to be the responsible party onsite to ensure that we don't see any repeats of the incidents this week.

It would involve moving into his suite, yes. I already have alternative arrangements in mind for Artie and Miles, if we go ahead with this. I'm sure you can understand why it might not be a good idea to expose the boys to him on a daily basis.

"Deliberately isolating himself from the rest of the students"? That sounds familiar. Painfully so, in fact.

I've thought about this overnight, and I accept. Will someone be telling him about the new arrangements, or will I surprise him?

It wouldn't be wise to surprise him, I think. I'll speak to him about it. If you need any help getting your things packed, I'm sure you've got a number of people you can call on. Hell, I'm not bad at packing boxes myself.
