- one photograph (digital, printed on photopaper), Marie and Logan under a magnolia tree, obviously a candid shot taken without their knowledge, framed.
- one man's cross necklace, gold.
- one letter, on slightly fussy stationery.]
Dear Logan (young man, I am assuming this is your first name, but I can't be sure these days),
I was right pleased with the enclosed photograph and thought you would like to have a copy of it for yourself. I love these digital cameras. Put it somewhere that you'll remember to look at it. I expect to see it when I come to visit in the summer.
Regarding the other item, it belonged to my second husband, who was an Army officer. I like you, you remind me of him, and I've got too much clutter from the past around this place anyway, so it's yours. About time it got worn. I hear from my granddaughter that you're not the church-going type, so you'll have to take it in the spirit it's intended, a token of wishes for your well-being. Wear it in good health, if only for my great-granddaughter's sake.
Speaking of my great-granddaughter, she looked awfully tired when you two were here, and thin (what is it with young women these days?). You make sure she's eating and sleeping, you hear?
Sarah (Mamaw) and I will be coming to visit in May. If the Army wants to try and arrest two old women for coming to see their little girl, they can just try. Nothing but a bunch of stupid old men. I'd like to give them a piece of my mind. Don't you be telling Marie that we're coming, either. We want it to be a surprise. I expect you to help with this, by the way. I'll tell you what to do, you won't have to think, don't worry.
I think that's about everything. Give my girl a kiss for me and tell her I love her.
Love, Essielu
