Evening all. Pete, I've got some results from my time on Muir. Professor, I've added you and Moira in. She already knows, but it relates to your old ami Essex.
We've been looking into Essex ever since his sudden reappearance with the information about Xorn. Based on your records, and our own, we believed he was responsible for the attack on Muir Island a couple of years ago using a process he developed to alter a mutant using Kevin MacTaggart's DNA. We also assumed that he was responsible for selling the DNA on the bioweapons market, specifically to Baron Von Strucker. However, the deeper I've gotten into this, the more it looks like that's not the case.
I've had Doug run back the financials of the documentation you found on Joe MacTaggart and Baron Von Strucker, when they purchased the genetic materials of Kevin MacTaggart. The financial line was very well laundered, to the point that we almost got Ramsey on Interpol's most wanted for computer crimes.
The financials aren't disbursing to Essex, like we thought. I've been running down what financials I can get of his, and most of the money coming into his accounts that I can find are from small firms; genetic research. The money trail from MacTaggart's DNA? Ends at a final disbursement point to a shell company registered to an R. Campbell.
Muir is the real puzzle. According to the records, there was an R. Campbell who worked with Moira for years. I went through the computer database, and picked up something that got missed. People went looking for intrusive measures of tampering on the system, or signs of alteration of records. When none were found, I think the people looking went elsewhere. Here are the records of Essex' access times to the lab, including the times that Kevin's DNA vault in the cold storage were accessed.
Attached is a consolidated timeline of Essex' personal schedule, along with any ancillary data like out records of place and movement, security footage, what ever I could find. The two sets of records do not synch up.
Of the 17 times in which Essex was supposed to have either accessed MacTaggart's genetic material, or started lab processes using them, I have conclusive evidence that at least eight of them could not have possibly been Essex himself. In total, only two times correspond with gaps in his schedule that he could have possibly been there, as if the access was specifically targeted for times he was supposed to be away. The final timestamp is over twenty minutes after he was reported missing from de Center. If Essex was involved in this, he had to have an accomplice. It's also possible that he's been set up by this Campbell. I did some checking on his schedule, and guess what? Ever point of access was during a time listed for research. Not a single conflicting meeting or conference call. Now, there's no evidence of Campbell accessing de materials himself, but the interior of the labs aren't monitored by camera, and inside the lab, access between them isn't swipecard enabled.
There's one record of a potential intrusion that was recorded, but the source was archival material, so it wasn't really investigated. I got Moira to take a look. One of Essex' old projects was under redevelopment. An incomplete record of one of the early attempts back in 2000 or so was added as reference materials. Because of the age of de data and the incomplete nature, it was held in a much lower priority security level then the rest of the documentation. According to Moira, it's technical records and information on the process that they believe Essex used to create the clone for Joe MacTaggart.
None of this makes a lot of sense, at least not if Essex is responsible for what you think he is. There's no underlying motive here, at least not one that fits. According to your records, Professor, Essex, after having been friends with you and Moira for a decade, comes to the school. He objects to the X-Men enough to get himself kicked out after putting Betsy into a coma. He then risks his license to have her kidnapped, burns favours to use an army hospital for the surgery that saves her life, and then goes over to Muir as part of a deal to keep it from being shutdown by the British government. Later, he disappears with rumours of 'experiments', the military publicly disavows any involvement, but makes no attempt to find or arrest Essex.
The next time we think he shows up is with a clone using old versions of his own technology, that is spectacularly flawed to attack one on his closest colleagues on behalf of a man he hates. Then he pops up again to help provide information to save Xorn, and ten million Chinese for no personal gain, and now he's openly living in New York. The pieces do not add up. If this guy is the villain you think he is, why make such an utter botch of it? Why steal his own work? Why sell genetic material now, when he's had access to it for a decade? Finally, if he's doing all these evil experiments, why chose a high profile lab getting military oversight to try and hide it in if they're not aware of it?
If he's crazy he doesn't need a motive. But if not? He doesn't need money. Moira gave me the rundown on his reputation, and research labs around the world would line up to throw funding at him. If he's doing illegal experiments, he could have gotten funding and protection from at least two dozen governments I can think of off the top of my head. If he wanted revenge, he could have tampered with Xorn's containment helmet and killed us. He could have gone public about the school and the X-Men early, burned Xavier's reputation.
Pete, from this end, this line of the investigation is pretty much done. If Essex was behind these things, he needed at least one, perhaps several people assisting him. Maybe he's working with this Campbell, although Moira said that they hated each other.
The money from Strucker and MacTaggart definitely went to this Campbell, and based on the records from Muir, he's the only one that had both motive and opportunity to access the samples and steal some of the technology that was used. If the American government was getting into something they didn't tell their British counterparts at Muir, that information leaking to them is the perfect excuse to make them cut their loses and sacrifice Essex. On the surface the records match, and with Essex gone, Campbell is basically in charge when Moira's at the mansion. He disappears after the attack at New Years, and disappears in the kind of way you need money to do. Kevin's DNA gets out to the market after that fact.
Based on this, I think your Essex was smart enough to know he was about to get screwed over by the government and someone else, disappeared until they back off, and has returned publicly because he now can. But the evidence is strongly against him being involved in the Strucker or MacTaggart events.

Date: 2007-05-14 01:02 pm (UTC)I've never had the problem Charlie's mob have working with the man, and yeah, it sounds like the MacTaggart business was a fit up job, but y'know, it was *very* fucking easy for someone to fit him up with it.
So fair enough, he's not a priority at the moment, and for all I know he might be kind to his dear old mother, and adopt kittens and puppies left and right, but let's still be very fucking cautious around him.

Anyway, I've got him on the threat list for now, so if Doug's programs turn up anything, we'll get a ping. Otherwise, I'm dumping this in the hands of his ex-students and moving on to other things. Any new developments on the Uganda followup?
