Subject: Question re: shooting?
Mr. Bishop,
When the FBI and NYPD tell me I'm not allowed to be in possession of a firearm, is it implied that I also cannot go to the shooting range for practice? Or is shooting in a controlled environment allowed? I'm a little unsure and was hoping you'd be able to answer my question.
Regards,
Adrienne Frost.

You can still go to ranges which rent out their own pistols to be fired on their own range. I know a few ranges with a good selection. If you are not allowed to own a firearm then that's the route you'll have to take. Also, be prepared to have someone check in on you and ask some questions. If you just want to shoot for recreation with a rented pistol it shouldn't be a problem.

Ah yes, it was the rental part that gave me pause- I wasn't sure if 'possession' referred to owning or if it included touching firearms, as well. I'd rather not get into any more legal trouble so I just wanted to be sure. I don't really know any of the ranges in the area so if you are familiar with a few I'd certainly appreciate your recommendation. Being checked up on sounds incredibly tedious. I don't suppose there's any way to get around that, like say, if someone affiliated with law enforcement came along with me?

I can't really keep them from checking up on you. I could give a call ahead to some of the detective I've worked with, tell them what you're doing, and maybe they'll not bother but it's their discretion. If you want me to go with you, however, I can do that. They wouldn't check up with you while you were actually there either way.

Oh you're talking about general check-ups? Yes I'm receiving those already, even without the expressed interest in handling a firearm.
I wouldn't mind the accompaniment if you've got some free time in the future. I haven't been to a range in almost a year so I'm sure I would only benefit from a former cop's refresher course, if it suits you to do the whole tutoring bit.

Among others, actually. Not many have the firearms qualification I do, I suppose.

Lucky me then, learning from the master. Is there a particular day and time that works better for you?
