Dear Clarice,

Heya! How are things going for you? I’ve been taking dance lessons with my old dance instructor while I’m here, and I started thinking about you. Would you want to join my dance studio back in NY? It’s a really great place – the instructor is internationally known and amazing. I take ballet there, but she also teaches jazz and modern, both at assorted skill levels. It would be pretty easy, I’m sure, to get one of the image inducers every week for lessons, if you wanted. I won’t say that all the girls there are great and accepting and everything, they’re not, but some of them are really wonderful, and it’s good to get off the grounds occasionally.

Just something you might want to think about. Hope you’re enjoying your summer vacation!

Dear Jamie,

Yep, still love you. And this despite the ardent attentions of this complete ass here in Chicago. He’s decided that I shall be his, and no amount of me telling him to get lost seems to sway him. I’m about ready to hit him, but I’m worried he’d think it was some sort of bizarre come on. Gah.

Have taken to bringing you up in conversation with him basically all the time. “Oh yes, hi Michael, got a letter from my boyfriend. You know, my real boyfriend? The one I’m dating. I can show you a picture of him if you like. Because I carry around his picture, because he’s my boyfriend.” It seems to slowly be making an effect. Sara and Rachel (who’s a member of my dance class here) make jokes about stapling your picture to a board of wood and hitting him with the resultant ‘clue by four’. They think it’s hilarious.

I think they’re nuts.

How are the HeliX meetings going? RedX came up the other day and I told the girls about HeliX – they think it’s a fantastic idea. I think I even explained it well enough that they want to form their own branch, although they’re not sure how it would work since they don’t know any mutants themselves. Almost told them, but...

What can I say – I’m a scaredy cat. And please ignore the dreadful pun.

Hope you’re well, and I love you so much.

Dear Marie-Ange and Doug,

How are you guys? Hope everything at school is well, I’m going out of my gourd, but am otherwise doing ok. I hope Jamie’s not being too mopey at you, Doug. If he is, you have my permission to make him go outside and have fun. How’re Artie and Miles? Numerous water fights happen yet?

Mainly just writing to say ‘hi’. It’s not that there’s nothing to do in Chicago, and it’s certainly not that I hate it here. I’d just far rather be there.

Anyway, hope you’re having a good summer. Say hi to everyone for me.

Dear Kitty,

Still love you back. Convenient, that, eh? I have big news, by the way, but I'm saving it until the end of the letter, if possible. First, though . . .

I told you so. Told you, told you, told you I wasn't the only sentient heterosexual guy in the world. Ha. Neener, neener, and yes, neener.

That said, Sara and Rachel sound like very sensible young women and I think you should listen to them.

HeliX is going pretty well--we had another meeting last week, talked about the Friends of Humanity youth propaganda (hope you aren't running into any of that out there, it's pretty unpleasant stuff) and pretty much decided we're going to do the moral high ground thing and, y'know, not be scary. I'm gonna organize an amusement park trip or something fun like that just as soon as we get T-shirts that we can all wear and people can ask about and we can say yeah, we're normal teenagers who like tolerance and stuff like that, which means we need a logo to put on the T-shirts, and I think Angie's working on one but I'm trying not to be pushy, because things are still kind of a little weird with them sometimes.

Oh, and when I posted to set up the meeting, guess who got interested? Askani. Yeah, the lady in Nathan's head. So she had Nathan come and talk to me about it (and he had a present for me from the trip he and the Doc took to Greece, too--there's a matching one for you for when you get back, but I'm not spoiling the surprise, because it's incentive, see) and . . . well, she's pretty intense, but we got along pretty well. One of the stranger conversations I've ever had. And she and Nathan say if I want to talk to her again, I can just ask, which is pretty cool. And we started the Askani language group on Friday, so eventually I may be able to talk to her actually in her own language, which will be nifty. I'd say "I love you" in Askani except most of the lecture was on the history of the clan--which is really fascinating all by itself--and pretty much the only thing we learned how to say is "Hello." And they're still trying to figure out a standardized spelling using the English alphabet, so I'm not sure I know how to write it here. Pretend I did.

And if it helps you not be a scaredy cat--am not ignoring the pun, it's a cute pun--remember, everybody who watches CNN knows I'm a mutant, so that could be sort of a stepping-stone for you. If you want to tell them.

And wow, I babbled a lot there. Building up to the big announcement. Which is:

How'd you like to come down to the farm for the July 4th weekend? My parents are staging a reunion for both sides of the family for the holiday--we used to do it almost every year, except then I manifested, and now this is the first one since then, and they all know about me now, and I'm kind of wigged about that even though I know in my head they'll all pretty much be okay about it except Aunt Mona, who isn't coming, and neither are her twins, but I never really got along with them anyway, and--please come? A whole weekend. With me. Without your parents. With my parents, but they love you, and my aunts and uncles and cousins and stuff who'll all like you a lot too, please please please convince your parents to let you come, my mom and dad will help with the plane ticket if that'll help, we can spend the whole weekend together and it'll be great. Write me back.

Love,
Jamie
