Heya,

It occurs to me that I'm in debt to Nathan. Deeply in debt. Horribly in debt and such a situation cannot, but simply cannot be allowed to go on longer like this. It would simply be Wrong of me to allow that to continue.

As such - think your father would mind making a puzzle box for me to give Nathan as a gift?

I just need about two square inches of space inside it, which means your father can make it as big and as complex and multi-layered as he likes. (In fact? I want it to be brain twister. Pun intended.)

You want to know if my dad would mind being asked to do an extra-complex puzzle box? You're kidding, right? This is the guy who has an entire peg-board of tiny little screwdrivers and hammers and chisels and I don't know what all just so he can have the exact right tool for making all the little fiddly bits fit right. We used to joke that he picked up the hobby because he wanted to top Grandpa's cord-reinforced packing tape for making Christmas presents impossible to unwrap.

In other words, yeah, I'm pretty sure I can convince him. :) You have a timetable in mind?

Oh, hell, now you've done it, I'm going to have to sit through another three weeks of phone calls and e-mails of Dad acting like a chipmunk on speed, just like when he was making that box for Lorna that wouldn't open unless the magnetic fields on the fiddly bits were just right.

Do you have any idea how surreal it is for me to see my calm, collected, deliberate, salt-of-the-earth dad act like a chipmunk on speed?

I swear, they're just gonna adopt you someday.

I bet he could. He's a sadist with his puzzle boxes, my dad. I ever tell you, though, I got revenge? Dwarves apparently make some really nasty blacksmith puzzles. :)

And no. It's worse. You're at least known for the occasional hyperactive jags--I've seen you and Lorna in a mall, remember? This is my father. Acting like a chipmunk.

On speed.
