Hey.
So, a little bird with enough cash to buy and sell me, like, a billion times over tells me I should e-mail you. Who am I to say no to a guy like that? Nobody, that's who. So, this is me, Beth, saying "hey", just like he asked.
He said you were interested in Jamie's thing, but not up to coming to the actual face-to-face meetings. He didn't go into the gorey details, just that you've had a little bit of trouble with some punks in town, so I can totally understand not wanting to come out. There are some real assholes out here - I've gone home with my fair share of bruises and broken noses, thanks to them. It's not a "grr, mutant, must maim" thing with me, though.. it's a "grr, girls shouldn't skateboard, show her why" thing, though how they make the "girls don't skateboard - kick her ass" connection is waaaay beyond my scope of logic.
Er, sorry. Tangent. I do that. Ramble, and tangent.
We should probably start with the get-to-know-you stuff, huh? Well.. as you've gathered, I hope, I skateboard. My brother got me into it a couple years ago, before he went off to NYU to do more of that 'school' thing. I don't need to worry about that crap until next year at the earliest, thank God. I don't know if I can take more school, but you know, mom'll give me the Evil Eye if I don't. Boo.
Anyway.. your turn? I've probably rambled on long enough for a while.

Hey, Bethany. Nice to kinda-meet you.
And, yeah. I'll probably be along to the face-to-face meetings at some point, but I'm not quite ready for that yet. I'm sure you're all great, but... well, you know how it is.
Get-to-know you stuff. Right. I came from LA, 'bout six months ago, and I've been at the school ever since. I don't skateboard, myself, but my ex-roomie Alex does, and some of the guys back home did, so I won't go all glazed if you talk about it.
School. Huh. Well, I'm gonna get my SATs, but I'm not too sure if I'll be going on anywhere after that. Never really thought about it, to be honest. Although I'd have to get a scholarship or something to pay tuition, and I'm not so sure that's happening.
Over to you. ;)

LA? Cool. I've never been very far from here. Furthest I've been is Boston for a concert, I think.. but my folks don't exactly know that one. Shhh. Keep it under your hat.
School's one of those "necessary evils", I think. If you don't get a little piece of paper that says "hey, employer-man, I can do _____", you aren't likely to get a job doing it, you know? Kind of sucks. So, yeah, I'll probably wind up in a college of some sort, but I have no idea what for. Yet. Maybe photography or journalism or something, get a gig with the Village Voice or Daily Bugle. That could be pretty cool..
Scholarships aren't too hard to find, depending on where you go to school. One of my friends' older sisters goes to school in Georgia, there's a scholarship there where the only real sticking point is having lived there for a year. Get yourself a state ID or something as quick as you can, NY might have something similar, if you're gonna do school here. Or, y'know, at all.
Over to me, huh? Let's see..
Kung fu movies. Kung fu movies are my life's blood. Especially untranslated ones. I don't speak a word of Japanese, but getting some friends together, lots of overly-caffeinated soda, and watching untranslated foreign flicks is a blast. Add your own soundtrack. As an example, we believe The Returner (which has been dubbed and shipped over to the states, now) is a movie about a washed-up J-Pop singer who licks and gropes everything that moves, INCLUDING the tiny little alien he kidnapped in order to hold the world hostage, to make them listen to his music. A girl is sent back in time to prevent this from happening, and tricks some scruffy asian guy and The Oracle into helping her.
Cool movie, though. Neat special effects. Totally rent it.

Date: 2004-03-09 03:11 pm (UTC)Well, I'd never left LA before I came here, so I guess we're quits. And your secret's safe with me (of course, it helps that I haven't met your folks ;)).
As far as school goes, I haven't decided yet. It was never really an option back home, one way or another, so I'm still thinking about if I even want to go, yet.
Kung fu movies? You should meet Shiro - Japanese guy at our school. If he finds out you like kung fu movies, he might even decide he likes you, American or not. Me, I'm more into Spanish-language movies. You seen any Almodovar?

Date: 2004-03-09 03:27 pm (UTC)Almodovar? Nuh-uh, I don't think I've seen any. Maybe when you feel up to getting out of that big pretty school of yours, we can watch some? Either that, or we could just both be dirty, dirty pirates, download the same copy (copies?), and watch it while we talk via IM or something. I'd suggest the phone, but I'm told my accent gets a little thick when I'm not keeping track of it. Usually not a problem, but not all of my friends can speak Bronx-ese.

Date: 2004-03-09 03:38 pm (UTC)And that sounds good - I'm sure somewhere in the city has to have a movie festival at some point, or if not, downloading works too. You have to see Almodovar's movies. Antonio Banderas is in some of them, if that makes them any more interesting for you...

Date: 2004-03-09 03:50 pm (UTC)Film festivals abound in the city, dude. You totally don't get out enough. When you're up for it, you and me (and anybody else you want to drag along), Central Park. I'll give you the nickle tour. Even foot the bills for cabs and stuff.
